Yvette du Toit

Yvette du Toit is originally from Pretoria where she completed a fashion design and business degree before moving to London for almost 11 years. Her tenure in London saw her changing careers to the world of information security and 6 years ago, she found herself back on home soil. Yvette is currently establishing a local practice for a US-based company in South Africa, IOActive, Inc. Yvette manages the lead scoping and delivery of security related engagements aligned with customer business objectives. She has experience overseeing security assessments, audits and penetration using IOActive methodologies.

Her work sees her travelling quite a lot and sometimes to very interesting places, like Seattle and Finland talking to people about security. She is currently completing her Masters Degree in Information Security from Rhodes University.

Venue

The Wild Fig restaurant brings that warm country feeling directly to our doorsteps in Cape Town. The restaurant is located on a portion of the Valkenberg Estate and is situated in a fairly new building that was built as a part of the restoration of the Valkenberg Manor House. The Wild Fig bar is built in the original barn which is a National Monument. The venue leaves its guests with warmth and comfort and makes them a part of a great piece of history. A crackling fire in Winter and an outdoor garden lunch in Summer makes The Wild Fig a perfect venue all year round.

Sarah-Marie NothlingSarah-Marie Nöthling is an Analyst Developer at Open Box Software, Cape Town, specializing in building custom Business Intelligence solutions for clients. Sarah-Marie originally hails from Pretoria where she completed her BIS Multimedia degree followed by a BSc Computer Science (Hons) at the University of Pretoria. After lecturing briefly, she decided to become a resident of our beautiful Mother City in 2010, where she progressed from .NET development into more data-centric roles.

What will Sarah be talking about?

Sarah will be discussing business intelligence at the upcoming dinner.Businesses understand the importance of investing in operational IT requirements, but they soon reach a point of maturity where gaining insight into the health of a business is difficult, and making informed strategic decisions become imperative to its survival. Sarah-Marie will provide an overview of business solutions, as well as the process of developing a data management and insight management solutions. She will also share a few practical examples of how interactive reporting dashboards and visualisation tools empower users to gain insight into their business.

Students

One of primary focus  for 2013 was to encourage more girls to take in an interest in technology. The first step in doing this was to invite students from all levels to join the Girl Geek Dinners. So far we have had students from over 5 different institutions join us and we would like to see this grow in 2014. Flash Talks

In keeping with tradition of our year end functions we have decided to not have a single keynote speaker but rather flash talks from a few regular Girl Geek Dinner attendees. We would like to use this time to network as much as possible and get to know all the girls who attend the dinner and find out what inspires them. Let’s use this time to celebrated being strong, successful women in technology.

Founded through a partnership between Restaurateur, Francoise Queyroix and Events Co-ordinator, Morae Campher, their restored Victorian Heritage House has become a fixture with the Cape Town locals looking for a tasty bite to eat, somewhere to relax with friends and drinks or a venue to host their function.

Event Details
PyConZA is the annual gathering of the South African community using and developing the open-source Python programming language. PyConZA is organized by the Python community for the community and presented by the Praekelt Foundation. The aim is to make PyConZA accessible to as many people as possible and to foster unique solutions to the challenges we face in Africa.

Kat Scholtz

Katharina joined the Quirk team in 2008. Kat travelled abroad before coming back to SA to earn a degree in Film Production and Media Studies at UCT, and then went on to an honours in Brand Leadership from the Vega School. She was recently awarded a Masters in Media Theory and Practice from UCT. Kat started as an intern herself, and went on to play a major role in developing and managing the Quirk Graduate Programme that exists today. Alongside Lyndi Lawson-Smith she co-founded and built  Quirk Education, producing and eventually managing the production of content and video production for their elearning and other courses. She is currently Head of Courses, responsible for both materials and the academic coordinators, with the growing Quirk Education team.

Nikki Cockcroft

Nikki Cockcroft graduated from UCT with a business degree in Information Systems and a post graduate degree in Marketing. After starting her career as IT Manager at Acceleration she soon realised she had a passion for online media and thereafter moved into the position of Campaign Manager. In March 2003, Nikki joined 365 Digital as Business Development Manager, progressing through the ranks to become CEO. As CEO she successfully introduced additional business areas including that of web development, ad operations and content syndication. After building 365 Digital into a profitable business, she oversaw a successful Management Buyout of the business and subsequent sale to Primedia. Nikki was appointed as CEO of Primedia Online a year later in September 2007. In 2010 she was appointed as CEO of Prezence Digital and in July 2011 Nikki moved to retail giant Woolworths as Head of Online.

Robyn Hobson

Whilst studying Business Science (UCT), Robyn always believed she would end up being an out-of-work actress. However she graduated, stumbled into an internship at a Digital Agency and the rest is history. After dabbling in Digital, playing in Mobile and eating, sleeping and breathing Social, she is now embarking on the Freelance Chapters.

She is passionate about using the social networks for good, as well as building valuable communities for her clients.  She still has lofty dreams of winning an Oscar.

Samantha Harper

After studying at Cape Tech for her After studying at Cape Tech for her Marketing Diploma, having no idea what to do in the real world, Samantha fell into recruitment by working for one of the top corporate agencies in SA. At 23 she founded her first recruitment company and then decided to merge it with a larger organization, however things did not work out as expected and this led her to start Nu Beginnings.

Sam is totally crazy about people, careers and IT but realizes that the recruitment industry is taking a real knock with regards to the ethics and service level. Nu Beginnings was founded to change the way recruitment is done, perceived and received. Specialising in the IT field for the past 8 years, Samantha has collected a pool of knowledge and experience in the recruitment industry.

Launch48 brings it’s 48 hour entrepreneurship event to Cape Town.

On the 17th May, held at the Bandwidth Barn, a Launch48 Weekend event for entrepreneurs to get together and build a completely new online or app based business in just 48 hours.

In the past 3 years, she has presented her views on social learning, technology and entrepreneurship across the world. She took part in Old Mutual’s “Do Great Things” campaign, and was identified as one of the Mail & Guardian’s “Top 200 Young People to Take to Lunch”. She is a council member for the Fifth Conference (a global initiative that recognises disruptive ideas and innovations, with her role focusing on education) and has been identified by the Cape IT Initiative as an IT Hero.

Barbara has contributed to the UNESCO Courier as one of 21 young people changing the world and has been recognised as one of the top entrepreneurs and women in business in Africa, by the likes of IT Web Africa and CNN. Barbara is the only African representative sitting on the Mobile World Capital Advisory Board – an initiative run by MWC Barcelona in conjunction with the GSMA.
